The latest CE-marked peritoneal dialysis system from Baxter ($BAX) has two-way connectivity that enables healthcare providers to monitor home treatments and adjust them remotely as necessary. The system, called HomeChoice Claria with ShareSource, is expected to reduce manual data input by patients and clinics.

The device is slated to launch in some European and Asian countries during the first half of this year.

Unlike in traditional dialysis, in peritoneal dialysis the patient's blood isn't removed from the body. Instead, a sterile cleansing solution, or dialysate, is flowed into the abdomen via a catheter. That fluid remains in the abdomen for a prescribed period of time, during which the dialysate absorbs waste, chemicals and extra fluid from the capillaries in the abdominal cavity. The dialysate is subsequently drained. It's an option typically reserved for end-stage renal disease patients.

"Claria builds upon our market-leading HomeChoice APD device with new features to make the system more intuitive for patients to operate in their home and while traveling," Dr. Bruce Culleton, renal therapeutic area lead VP at Baxter, said in a statement. "Additionally, ShareSource, the system's web-based platform, provides physicians remote access to their home patients' treatment information allowing for more timely and personalized care."

The Claria with ShareSource has patient report dashboards that are accessible by healthcare providers. It also has a two-line display screen for improved visibility and a universal interface that is available in 41 languages.

Baxter is in the midst of spinning out its biopharma holdings into a new company, Baxalta. The separation is slated to complete mid-2015. The resulting Baxter will be focused solely on medical products, with a particular emphasis on dialysis.
