Position Description
ABOUT THE AGENCY
A growing full-service healthcare marketing agency (delivering both promotional medical education and publication planning services and products) with an exclusive focus on HIV, viral hepatitis, and other ‘ID specialty’ therapeutics is a Senior Editorial Director to be based in their New York City office. The agency brings a unique combination of clinical background, marketplace savvy, imagination, scientific rigor, and passion to its work. Their focus is strategic, but they are also well-schooled in tactical execution, making use of a broad array of tactics to ensure the right communications reach the appropriate audience.
The Agency offers health insurance through Oxford, a 401-K plan with employer contribution, all usual holidays, vacation and sick leave, and flexibility to work from home occasionally.
THE POSITION
The Senior Editorial Director requires excellent marketing and communications skills, extensive experience managing and implementing both promotional medical educational activities and publications, outstanding client management skills, and strong problem solving skills. The Senior Editorial Director will be responsible for implementation and oversight of all editorial projects, editorial program development, and development and management of the editorial staff (both in-house and freelance).
The Senior Editorial Director will have several years of in-the-trenches experience creating promotional medical education materials and creating and managing strategic publication plans and will be able to bring this expertise to bear while serving as the prime client liaison on editorial projects. As a senior team member, this individual will ensure top-quality delivery of the editorial output, providing oversight of the editorial function and will have responsibilities that include, but are not limited to:
• Serving as key client editorial contact, establishing strong relations
• Managing writers, editors, and other editorial staff (both in-house and freelance), including scheduling and tracking of all editorial projects to ensure that timelines are met
• Providing editorial direction and guidance on accounts
• Ensuring that all editorial output meets quality standards and that messages and content are on target
• Ensuring that all editorial materials submitted to the client adhere to client requirements for review
• Interfacing with other team members and seeking their input and review
• Advising editorial team members on client management strategies and growing their skills in this area
• Leadership of and participation in editorial aspects of new business activities
• Contributing to guidance and oversight of the direction, growth and operations of the office, as appropriate
These responsibilities require strong strategic abilities and excellent people- and project-management skills, as well as motivational skills. In particular, the candidate needs to demonstrate a high level of competence that will allow the client to feel confident that, whatever the task, it will be accomplished effectively and efficiently. The successful candidate has outstanding client management and counseling skills, and is an effective and creative problem solver. A deep understanding of product marketing needs and strategies also is essential.
While this position requires a high degree of strategic ability, it is essential that the Senior Editorial Director also must be willing to get involved with doing the work, as needed and appropriate. This is especially important because much of the work will be carried out by freelance writers and editors. Ideally, the candidate will have a network of freelancers to call upon and will be able to find additional people to add to the existing freelance pool.
