Position Description

This position supports the Global Oncology Medical Affairs Team in the Medical Information Department. The primary focus will be the support of Medical Information requests for information regarding our products in the Oncology therapeutic area, the drafting of responses in accordance with industry standards and Biogen Idec policies and ongoing support for various information management initiatives.

Primary responsibilities include responding to call center inquiries by providing verbal and written clinical and technical information to incoming unsolicited requests for product information as well as intake and documentation of adverse events as they relate to Biogen Idec products. This includes the development and maintenance of standard response letter inventories, annual review for content updates and functioning as project lead during internal legal/regulatory approval of Medical Information materials.

This position will also provide support as clinical consultant: Provide clinical support to Sales and Marketing and Medical Affairs; develop and/or participate in training programs and provide training presentations where appropriate; provide support to Biogen Idec customers at major scientific meetings; serve as a liaison between Medical Information and other Biogen Idec departments.

The Medical Information Specialist will also be expected to contribute to following activities: critically review and evaluate medical literature for use in developing responses to inbound inquiries; provide clinical support within assigned therapeutic area (Oncology) to internal business partners such as sales/marketing, managed markets, medical affairs etc.; review clinical slide sets and other educational material for accuracy and consistency; participate in clinical review of marketing/promotional materials for scientific accuracy; coordinate coverage and staff MA booth at medical/professional conferences; weekly, monthly quarterly and annual performance metrics reports; lead ongoing internal training of Medical Affairs staff; conduct Medical Information Sales Training presentations; and participate in on-call responsibilities of the Medical Information Department. Additional opportunities for ad hoc projects expected, including support of a centralized information database, development and maintenance of Medical Information internet properties, development of internship and fellowship program and other high visibility projects.

• Understanding of the indications for marketed products and investigational compounds in late development to attempt to identify future topics of scientific interest
• Knowledge of basic legal/regulatory issues involved with receipt of medical information requests and dissemination of information in order to ensure appropriate acquisition of requestor information; perform initial triage, and construct written responses for requestors
• Professional demeanor as the primary liaison between the requestor and the company
• Good organizational and follow-up skills for the successful triage and coordination, and completion of Medical Information requests
• Advanced knowledge of marketed products and investigational compounds in late development
• Ability to independently coordinate and supervise all aspects of the fulfillment of a Medical Information request, including the coordination of written responses, de novo literature searches, searches of the post-marketing study database, adverse event searches and other information searches
• Skilled at cross-functional interactions with members of the Medical Affairs Department, Sales and Marketing, Drug Safety, QA, Customer Service, Sales Training and Information Technology groups


• Minimum of 2 yrs. related experience in a Medical Information role strongly preferred
• Background in oncology therapeutic area
• Knowledge of medical terminology and strong computer literacy required
• Experience working with post-marketing regulations within the industry and their practical implementation preferred
• Requires strong verbal and written communication skills, a professional demeanor, excellent judgment, and an ability to handle multiple projects and work independently in a dynamic environment
• Travel to medical conferences, involving overnight travel and occasional weekend travel (20%) is required
