Position Description
As the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – you will join a growing R&D Team within the Life Science Chemical Analysis – Agilent La Jolla. You will become part of an integrated team of professionals who are working at an accelerated pace to commercialize new life science solutions.
In this role you will work under limited supervision, research, plan, and design mechanical , opto-mechanical and electromechanical products and systems, and direct and coordinate activities involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and repair of mechanical or electromechanical products and systems
Using your in depth experience in the design of scientific, precision measurement, or clinical diagnostic instruments you will lead the mechanical effort in the development of our next generation of biotechnical research instrumentation.
Key responsibilities:
- Researches and analyzes data such as customer design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.
- Develops detailed written functional specifications, test specifications and protocols, documentation and project schedules.
- Designs products or systems such as instruments, mechanisms, controls, robots, engines, machines, and mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, or optical systems.
- Designs and mathematically models mechanical systems using a variety of CAD modeling and simulation packages including kinematics and FEA tools.
- Plans and directs engineering personnel in fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment, and development of methods and procedures for testing products or systems. Supervisory experience is highly desired.
- Directs and coordinates fabrication and installation activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and customer specifications.
- Coordinates operation, maintenance, and repair activities to obtain optimum utilization of machines and equipment.
- Designs products and systems to interface machines, hardware, and software.
- Evaluates field installations and recommends design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions.
Requires:
- BA/BS in Engineering or equivalent.
- 6+ years related experience required in a mechanical design engineering role specializing in instrumentation development for medium volume manufacturing.
- Experience and track record of success working on products from concept to commercialization.
- Hands on experience with database software; CAD Design software; Simulation and FEA software, Development software; Manufacturing software and current Microsoft Office Suite highly desired.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to apply mathematical concepts to complex simulations of kinematics performance and finite element analysis.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work within global cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively present information and interface with all levels of internal/external stakeholders.
- Familiarity with ISO 13485 standards and / or FDA’s QSR’s is highly desirable.
- Available for up to 10% travel.
