Position Description

Mpex Pharmaceuticals, a San Diego-based biotechnology company focused on the discovery and development of new antibacterial agents, seeks an outstanding professional for the position of Scientist III/IV, Medicinal Chemistry.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Individuals will be required to work in a synthetic medicinal chemistry lab and will have excellent knowledge of organic synthesis, aspects of drug design related to pharmacologic properties and development of structure-activity relationships. The candidate should be highly committed to having significant impact on drug discovery by displaying a high level of creativity and by actively contributing to all aspects of project planning as part of a multidisciplinary team, and will be expected to have a good understanding of the all disciplines involved in drug discovery and lead optimization. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. The candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills. The candidate would also be responsible for supervision and mentoring of BS/MS level chemists.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

• Develop, evaluate, optimize and implement new technologies, laboratory protocols, and methodologies to meet project goals and objectives.
• Analyze and interpret scientific data; troubleshoot problems and propose solutions.
• Maintain familiarity with current scientific literature relevant to the research experiments and utilize scientific literature, with an understanding of reaction mechanisms and synthetic organic chemistry to design, synthesize and characterize compounds for use as novel therapeutic agents.
• Prepare and organize data for presentation to other team members or collaborators in individual, group and departmental research meetings.

JOB REQUIREMENTS / EDUCATION:

The candidate will have a Ph.D. in medicinal or organic chemistry with a minimum of 5 years of pharmaceutical/biotech experience in medicinal chemistry programs emphasizing lead optimization and development candidate selection. A solid background in multi-step synthesis and lead optimization strategies, record of technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others, and independent innovation is required The candidate should have a good working knowledge of a variety of biological activity assays, in vivo pharmacology, in vitro ADME, and DMPK is required.

Experience in working with antiinfective drug discovery and peptide chemistry is preferred but not required.
