Position Description

Mpex Pharmaceuticals, a San Diego-based biotechnology company focused on the discovery and development of new antibacterial agents, seeks an outstanding professional for the position of Research Associate IV/Scientist I, Medicinal Chemistry.
SUMMARY:
Individual will be required to work in the lab and will be responsible for the synthesis of novel pharmacologically active compounds using organic synthetic techniques.
JOB REQUIREMENTS / EDUCATION:
The candidate will have an MS degree in Organic Chemistry, and 5 years or more of synthetic chemistry experience, preferably in the pharmaceutical industry; or a BS in Chemistry with an emphasis on organic synthesis and 8 years or more of synthetic chemistry experience, preferably in the pharmaceutical industry. An understanding of fundamental reaction mechanisms and multi step organic chemistry, protecting group strategies, ability to use spectroscopic techniques NMR, IR, MS, etc. and spectral interpretation to assign/confirm chemical structure, and the ability to use the chemical literature and computer searching techniques to plan, solve and execute on the synthesis of target molecules is required.
Candidates must have synthetic organic chemistry experience, with experience in multi step organic synthetic reactions. Experience in the following is required:
• Normal phase and reverse-phase preparative HPLC and silica-gel column chromatography for the purification of compounds.
• Micro-scale and gram-scale synthesis using air and light sensitive reagents;
• Interpretation of data to support synthesis and characterization of organic compounds.
• Working with organometallic reagents, synthesizing heterocyclic compounds.
Experience with peptide chemistry is preferred.
