Illumina ($ILMN) has outlined its plan to release a semiconductor-based sequencing system. The product, currently dubbed Firefly, will become the first Illumina sequencing system to rely on something other than optical readouts. Illumina signaled its interest in sequencing on complementary metal-oxide semiconductor chips when it bought Avantome back in 2008, but bringing the technology to market has taken time.
