Northrop Grumman Wins Bioinformatics Integration Award to Support National Institutes of Health

ROCKVILLE, Md., Nov. 16, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has been selected by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to provide advanced information technology and bioinformatics support in the collection, analysis and exchange of scientific data for science researchers investigating immunology and immune-mediated diseases.

The five-year, multidisciplinary Bioinformatics Integration Support Contract (BISC) (No. HHSN272201200028C) was awarded to Northrop Grumman by the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. It has a maximum potential value of $30 million and is a recompete of a contract that the company has held since 2004. The contract will enable scientists to easily access and exchange interoperable complex data sets to accelerate scientific discovery.

The work will be performed primarily in Rockville. Northrop Grumman's partners are the Stanford University School of Medicine, Palo Alto, Calif., and E-SAC, Inc. of Rockville. The contract is an integral component of Northrop Grumman's biomedical informatics efforts and programs in support of the life sciences.

BISC provides information technology support in the collection, analysis, archiving and exchange of basic scientific and clinical data. It also supplies bioinformatics support to NIH-funded immunology research through the continuation and refinement of a scientific website called ImmPort (http://Immport.niaid.nih.gov), as well as the development of optimal methods for data collection, storage, exchange and interoperability.
